Poet Phil Kaye Visits WSIS

Famous Poet Phil Kaye Zooms in from California

Recently, poet Phil Kaye spoke to the 8th-grade English/reading classes over a Zoom call. Despite some initial technical difficulties, he introduced himself, talked about poetry, and shared some of his own poems. In-person eighth-grade students watched from the Litttle Theater, while students at home were able to tune in virtually. Sixth-grade students also watched from their classrooms. The visit was the final activity for the eighth-grade Phi Favorite Poem project. Phil Kaye is a spoken-word poet who performs his original poetry and facilitates poetry workshops for students of all ages through his non-profit, Project VOICE (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression). Phil performed for our school and then conducted a poetry-writing workshop with our students.

After his presentation, he stayed on Zoom and some students moved into the cafeteria for his poetry workshop. He taught us techniques and ideas to spark ideas to write about. I think it was a fun thing to experience and a cool opportunity to learn that provided a different perspective than our normal classroom activities.
