Have you ever played softball? To play softball you need a standard bat, a glove to field the ball with and a softball. The game is played in innings. One inning counts as each team fields and hits once. There are four bases on the field: first base, second base, third base, and home plate. The bases are in the infield which is a dirt surface. The outfield has no bases in it and is a grass surface. There are various positions you can play on the softball field. The infield includes pitcher, catcher, third base, short stop, second base, and first base. The third, first, and second baseman, along with the shortstop are to field the ball when it is hit to them and throw it to the base where they can get the batter out. The pitcher’s job is to pitch the ball to the batter from the other team. The ump will either call a strike if the pitch is good or a ball if the pitch is bad. If the batter gets three strikes they are out. If the batter gets four balls they can run to first without getting out. The catcher will stand behind the batter and catch the ball that the pitcher pitches. The outfielders are to back up the infielders and catch any balls that are hit to them in the air. The fielders must get three outs to hit.
