Have you ever wondered if there is such a thing as an immortal animal? Well, meet the immortal jellyfish, scientifically known as the Turritopsis dohrnii. This creature has an ability that not many others have. What makes this jellyfish so special is that.. It never dies.
This jellyfish has an amazing characteristic that allows it to be immortal. One of the ways it does this is by regenerating its cells into polyps. If the jellyfish dies by any natural cause (Such as starvation, stress, and environmental changes) then it will sink to the bottom, and emerge into a polyps, turning into a whole new jellyfish. It’s almost as if it never even died in the first place!
Could you believe this jellyfish dates back to before the extinction of dinosaurs? Well, you should believe it! These jellyfish have been around for more than 66 million years! They have been around even before the demise of the dinosaurs. Though, they were not discovered until the late 1800’s. This is one old jellyfish!
This organism is also a carnivore. It feeds on plankton, fish eggs, other jellyfish, and plenty more. It hunts and feeds with its tentacles. It is also known to eat crab and shrimp, as well. Some of them are even known to eat organisms bigger than them!
The immortal jellyfish is an organism that, well, never dies. If it happens to “die,” it regenerates its cells to transform into a new jellyfish. It has been known to be around even before the dinosaurs’ extinction. It is also known to eat fish, plankton, and other such foods. This organism is truly one of a kind!
