It starts in December and ends in February. Here’s something quite interesting: if it’s a leap year it ends on the 29th of February but if not then it ends on the 28th. It’s the coldest time of year because it is when the Northern Hemisphere points away from the sun. It is also the season with the least daylight hours.
It doesn’t take long for the temperature to drop. Reindeers can see in the dark. The first Winter Olympics took place in 1924. A snowflake can take up to 2 hours to fall from a cloud to the ground. Not every severe winter storm is a blizzard. Blizzards are violent winter storms that last at least three hours and combine subfreezing temperatures, mighty wind-laden, and, blowing snow reducing visibility to less than 0.25 miles. The tallest known snowman was taller than a 12-story building.
