Have you ever heard of a baiji? It is a sea animal! It is a very cool animal. It is a bottom feeder and a top feeder. It can weigh from 130 to 170 kg. Even though that seems like a lot it isn’t. It is about as heavy as a Great Dane or a Saint Bernard, could weigh that much.
Even though the baiji is really weird, its home is in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River(Changjiang) in China. It is also neighboring the Qiantang River. But it’s home is very cool. The baiji inhabited the Yangtze River, the third longest and largest river in the world. specifically the mainstream of its middle and lower reaches.
The baiji’s look is cool! It is dolphin-shaped but has a long nose like a swordfish. I think that is really cool because I thought that only swordfish had that nose. It also has a low triangular dorsal fin, and broad rounded flippers. They also have a pale blue-grey dorsally and are white ventrally.
Even though the baiji might be extinct, it is very interesting. They haven’t been seen since 2006. But scientists think they have gone extinct because of us. Scientists declared the baiji, or Yangtze River dolphin, functionally extinct in 2006 after an extensive survey failed to find any. Marking it as the first dolphin species to be driven to extinction by humans.
In conclusion, I think the baiji is really cool! I also think that you should learn more about it because it is really fascinating. But even though it could be extinct, I think it is a very nice sea animal. But this animal went extinct because of us. The baiji, or Yangtze river dolphin, went extinct due to human activities, primarily overfishing, bycatch in fishing gear, habitat degradation, and shipping traffic.
